Quackery and nice food in health food shops

November 28, 2008

Outside the cities in Ireland it’s not so easy to get “exotic” ingredients things like chestnuts and vanilla pods – I normally search in the local health food shop, where the clientele is mostly hypochondriacs seeking remedies for constipation and ennui, the proprietor behind the counter pretending he’s a pharmacist and disparaging “Western medicine”

I don’t mind, I suppose – I get to eat almond butter, and they get to moan about the EU to me for a few minutes. Made a half-heated attempt to engage in debate once, but thought better of it because “you can’t reason someone out of a position they didn’t reason themselves into” (can’t remember who said that, but I have found it to be true)
